A rare glimpse inside May St

Established in 2008, May Street Studios is a dedicated studio facility that’s home to over 25 artists – many of whom will have work on display during Marrickville’s Open Studio Trail on March 1st and 2nd. It is a rare event to see the studio open to the public and this will be the only chance for visitors to peek inside all year.

Here, studio manager Yvonne Levenston tells us what art lovers can look forward to in the lead up to the anticipated open weekend…

Can you tell us what you’ve got planned at the studio for the MOST Open Weekend?
The artists belong to a community that works and creates together. They are inviting the general public into their inner sanctum – and offering a chance to speak to the artists about their work and maybe take home a masterpiece! There is also an opportunity for visitors to enter a competition to win a painting (to the value of $150) of their choice or towards a commissioned piece of art.

What can people expect from the group exhibition that will be on display?
The group exhibition shows an excellent selection of the studio artists’ work in a professional exhibition space – enabling the viewer to see the artwork clearly.

How does it feel to be opening the doors to the public for the first (and only) time in 2014?
The artists are busy most of the year working and preparing for commissions, exhibitions
and competitions. Preparing for an open day is a lot of work and by opening just once per year we can focus all of our effort on this one.

What sets May Street Studios apart from other local studios?
We are a dedicated art studio concept where every attempt has been made to cater for the needs of the artist and their creative requirements. There is a mixture of emerging and established artists that makes up a very creative community. We are also environmentally conscious with solar panels, exhaust systems, filters for paint, daylight neon globes for best internal light systems, plus the facilities and utilities are new
and clean.

What do you love about being based in St Peters?
Aside from the fact that St Peters is extremely easy to get to from anywhere in Sydney and our studio is only five minutes walk from St Peters Station, Marrickville Council also regards their artists and studios highly and promotes the arts, so it’s nice to have that support.

May Street Studios: 23 May St, St Peters. The studio will be open 10am to 4pm, Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd March. For more information visit www.maystreetstudios.com.au.
