Arts: Lost and Found

One+2 artist studio and gallery is one of the fabulous art spaces opening their doors to the public during the Leichhardt Open Studio Trail. With a huge program of events on offer on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th March, we catch up with founder Rogerio Blanc-Ramos to find out what’s on the agenda…

What can people expect from the ‘FOUND’ exhibition you will be showcasing during LOST?
‘FOUND’ is an exhibition of works by the artists, where each work will be representing the artist’s medium and own style. The artists have played on the name of the art event, calling their own exhibit ‘FOUND,’ and it will be open throughout the whole weekend. The studios of 52 artists will also be open to the public offering a great opportunity for the public to exchange with the artists in attendance. Opening hours will be 10am to 4pm.

One+2 will be holding workshops for kids over the weekend too, why do you think it’s important for kids to get involved in arts?
Best explained by quoting Ursula Kolbe, author of three books on children and their art: “Children are eager explorers with intense desire and will to make sense of their world. Some of the most effective means of explaining things to themselves are drawing, painting and clay work. While using them to make images, they explore feelings and ideas and throughout their images they communicate thoughts to others as well as themselves.”

How do you think the Inner West arts scene could be improved?
A more active participation by the local councils and State Government. I do see Leichhardt Council acting as a positive drive in this area and look forward to seeing it continuing. At a state level I would like to see more active propositions or support for art-based events. Ultimately, I think that what is necessary is to have a few enthusiastic people getting out there with ideas, putting them to council or the local MP and everyone will benefit from the variety of artistic events in the area.
