Five Dock’s Dessert Destinations

Ciao’s resident sweet-tooth Emma McConnell finds an excuse to hoover up Five Dock’s sugar supplies.

Pasticceria Tamborrino

This café is a Five Dock institution. Tamborrino’s (as it’s known to locals) doubled its sized in 2008 to satiate the flocking crowds. Come here to try Italian favourites made by Roman-born pastry chef Vincenzo Tamborrino, such as cannoli, semifreddi, vanilla horns, Zuccherati, amaretti and gelato. Order an espresso to wash it down! Pasticceria Tamborrino also serves savoury meals, and has whole cakes to order. Make like a local and arrive early for sfogliatelli warm from the oven!

Cremeria de Luca

Just across the street from Tamborrino’s sits Cremeria de Luca, a family-run affair that had great success thanks to their long-established love of gelato. Bringing the noble craft from the streets of Sicily, this popular store is famous Sydney-wide for its gelato burger (or if you’re keen, a gelato burger cake!), however they also specialise in other European staples including granita, brioche, cioccolata calda, dessert arancini and of course… coffee! Open late during most days of the week, it’s the perfect spot to satiate your after-dinner-sugar-hit craving.

Sugar Pop Bakery

If you’re after something a little different be sure to check out Sugar Pop – it will please both your eyes and your stomach! The shop is a delightful addition to Five Dock and distinguishes itself as the Inner West’s home of couture cake pops. Moulded and embellished by hand, these unique and creative desserts are deliciously addictive, however the café promises plenty of other  delights, including cupcakes, macarons and the all-important ‘freak’ shakes (not for the faint-hearted). Gift packs are also available in store, so treat yourself… and someone else too!

If you have already tried the basics, then this is the perfect place to further extend your knowledge of traditional and celebratory Italian treats. Dig into crostoli, torta di mandorla, nacatoli, pastine and window shop their incredible tiered wedding cakes. With all their products made and baked on site, Marineve is definitely the real McCoy.
