Better than the Wizards

This is a six-piece band from Melbourne (pictured) that is jumping across plenty of genres; they have a soulful saxophonist who will suddenly start making calypso sounds and then the whole band will quickly change into a general indie sound. That might put most people off but some will love this. Check out their album launch at the Bald Face Stag.

Knowledge

For those who haven’t already heard of the Roller Den, it’s a new venue that’s opened in the basement of the Imperial Hotel on Erskineville Road. Their launch party was just last Friday, when they were very proud to stay open until 8am since new licensing laws don’t affect them. So take that Barry O’Farrell. Starting this coming Saturday, the Roller Den will be hosting a monthly hip-hop night and this inaugural event will be headlined by L-Fresh the Lion. I’ve said before that Aussie hip-hop doesn’t really do much for me but this dude hits the right notes. Maybe it’s just because I find him interesting; traditional Sikh musicians aren’t that common after all. Anyhow, make sure to check out the Roller Den when you can.
