Inner West Whispers – 226

Local gossip, rumour, hearsay and unsubstantiated fact...

Tree vandals, hooker scandals and the ACA moves to Leichhardt…

• Ironic that the greenest electorate in the Inner West has suffered one of the worst incidents of tree poisoning we’ve ever heard of in the area. Leichhardt Council undertook the planting of nine trees in Illoura Reserve, Balmain, in May 2013, only to have three of those trees vandalised and cut off at ground level sometime between August 17th and 18th. The trees were then replaced and surrounded by wire cages to prevent further attacks. However, in late December last year there was a deadly herbicide used to again destroy the three angophora sapling replacement trees.  Obviously someone doesn’t want their view being obstructed by native flora beautifying their local park. Perhaps the perpetrator owns a valuable house nearby? Just a hunch…

Hugh Jackman makes Leichhardt home…well, at least the organisation of which he is the patron has. The Actors Centre Australia is part of a strategy to save the Italian Cultural Centre. Councillors moved to approved the sale of the centre to Italian not-for-profit organisation Co.As.It, which is known for its transparent astute business dealings. They bought their current offices Casa D’Italia on Norton Street at the bottom of the market, and it is now worth well over a million.

• The wannabe opera singer who has been exercising her vocal chords at 10.30pm on the balcony of her Abbotsford Cove apartment had better turn it down. Complaints about her voice booming over the ocean are said to be reaching as far as Drummoyne. Whingers should be grateful they are getting ringside seats!

The Huntsbury Hotel in Petersham is not known for its hipster clientele but we’re not sure why there are young ‘women’ in very short skirts walking alongside the pub on Canterbury Road, beckoning drivers to stop. Has this strip become a makeshift mini red light district?
