Few characters are as indelible as Uma Thurman’s yellow jumpsuit clad ‘The Bride’, the fearsome survivor who gives “Kill Bill” its central identity and feminist legacy. Originally conceived as one long epic, the two volumes tell the tale of her quest for vengeance on the international assassins and former comrades who attempted to murder her on her wedding day.
Perhaps Quentin Tarantino’s most ambitious effort, the Kill Bill films are one of the most audacious odes to both Eastern and Western cinema that has ever been made. The first volume finds inspiration from the Far East and the films of the Shaw brothers, Sonny Chiba, Bruce Lee and even anime, and the second is a decidedly Western take on the samurai film. Filled with (literally) eye-popping action and whip-cracking dialogue, the whole bloody affair in its original two parts is bold and immensely entertaining action-packed thriller about a brutal betrayal and an epic vendetta.
