Movie giveaway: The Innocents

Anne Fontaine’s (Gemma Bovery, Coco Before Chanel) newest film, which opens at Palace Cinemas on April 27,  is a deeply emotional but nuanced exploration of complex themes.

Set in Poland in December 1945 – the Second World War has finally come to its brutal conclusion. Most survivors have experiences or witnessed ghastly horrors. Mathilde (Lou de Laâge), a young French Red Cross doctor, finds herself in Warsaw treating the last of the French soldiers returning from the front. One night, a nun appears at the clinic, begging Mathilde to follow her back to the convent on urgent business. What Mathilde finds there is shocking: a holy sister about to give birth. As Mathilde enters the sisters’ fiercely private world, secrets rise to the surface, and modernism and science clash with faith and tradition. Most of the nuns are pregnant. They go about their strict daily rituals, but inside the convent’s chilly stone walls, echoing with their melancholic chants, a dangerous revolution is taking place. TBC In cinemas from April 27

Powerful and moving. It examines every moral crevice of an unthinkable scenario.”

 ★★★★
“Played with restraint and individuality by a fine ensemble, this is a moving but provocative study of belief, duty, compassion and acceptance.”
