Shake it up

As we make our way into mid-November, there’s no turning back now, Summer is well and truly here. With it comes long days at the beach, sticky bus seats, sunburn and the realisation that you need to swap your morning coffee with something a little more refreshing. Here’s the best smoothies, juices and frappes to get you going!

Sadhana Kitchen, Enmore

Kickstart your morning organically at this vegan friendly café. They promise the best smoothies in town and with 100 per cent organic, plant based and super food ingredients, you know they’re at least doing something different.

Gulp down the Pitaya Tropical Smoothie, made with pitaya (dragon fruit), mango, orange and banana. Served in large glass jars with pinstriped straws, Sadhana’s smoothies are just delightful. You’ll leave patting yourself on the back for being so darn health conscious.

147 Enmore Rd, Enmore. Ph: 9516 1334.

Pulp Friction, Annandale

We’re a sucker for punny names and this one is particularly juicy (see what we did there?). Not only does it have a great name; this small café boasts a delicious range of fresh juices and smoothies. What’s their greatest drawcard? Their juices are served icy cold. Try the Energiser: an orange, pineapple, mint and ginger infusion that’ll get you going like a little pink bunny!

14 Booth St, Annandale. Ph: 9571 5973.

Queen Roll and Juice Bar, Newtown

This little hole in the wall serves up two staples that I would be happily left with on a desert island: freshly squeezed juices and Vietnamese pork rolls (stuffed with piles and piles of carrot and coriander).

Not yet subsumed into the gentrified café culture further down King St, Queen Juice Bar blends up a generous amount of snap-fresh fruit and vegetables all for a humble fiver, with your choice of milk, water or orange juice as a base. Apart from the usual suspects, there are some fruits on the menu you might not yet be familiar with – just another excuse to keep coming back for more!

Marrickville Organic Food and Famers Market

There’s no better way to start a Sunday morning than trawling through these bustling markets. Head straight to the Venus Whole Foods stall for the best smoothies.

Ignore the loopy names and try ‘Love’, with coconut milk, kale, banana, chia seeds and spirulin, or ‘Empower’, made with hand-pressed almond milk, banana, cacao, cacao nibs and mint. You’ll leave feeling ‘Enlightened’.

142 Addison Rd, Marrickville. Ph: 9999 2226

Excelsior Jones, Ashfield

Ashfield’s always been known as the go-to place for authentic dumplings and cheap butchers serving up the most mouthwatering crispy duck. Off the hustle and bustle of Ashfield’s main road, this trendy café gives us a whole new reason to love Ashfield.

For something a little naughty try the chocolate malted milkshake or, if you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, crawl into an old-fashioned spider lemonade. We know they’re not technically smoothies but they are just as good.
