Brookland Valley 2012 Verse 1 Shiraz

It can be hard work sorting the wheat from the chaff when it comes to sub-$15 red wines but this Margaret River shiraz certainly punches above its weight.

From around a dozen budget reds in a recent tasting this came up trumps with its dark berry fruitiness and well-integrated oak.

It’s a fruit-driven number, well balanced, with spice and dark chocolate notes.

It would be a good Christmas party or barbecue choice.

$15.

O’Leary Walker 2013 Polish Hill River Riesling

This is a quintessential summer wine; clean, crisp and refreshing and a perfect match for anything from Christmas seafood to a summer picnic.

The Clare Valley produces some of Australia’s best dry rieslings and O’Leary Walker always offer great value for money.

This has lovely lime citrus flavours and flinty minerality along with length and intensity on the palate.

Serve chilled on a warm day and have a second bottle ready to go.

Christmas Gift
Cape Mentelle 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon

Looking for a Christmas gift for a wine lover? You won’t go wrong with this stunning Margaret River red, a cabernet sauvignon that’s blended with a little cabernet franc and merlot.

A long-time benchmark, this is a deliciously complex beast that will probably cellar for two decades or more.

That said, it is already deliciously drinkable with dark cassis and herb notes and just a hint of toasty oak.

There’s plenty of drive here, real intensity and just enough softness to make it balanced and delicious right now.

$90.
