Thomas 2014 Braemore Semillon

Is this Australia’s best semillon year on year? Probably.

Is this outstanding new-release 2014 the best semillon Andrew Thomas has produced? Very likely.

Put simply, this is an outstanding version of under-valued Hunter semillon that makes you shake your head in bewilderment that the style is not more popular.

It is so pure, fresh and clean that you could almost take a bath in it. A steely style that would be marvellous paired with fresh oysters. $30.

Z Wine 2012 Rustica Shiraz

Z Wines is a small Barossa Valley winery run by the Zerk sisters, winemaker Janelle and marketer Kristen.

The Zerk family has been growing grapes since 1846 but Janelle is the first member of the family to turn to wine making. This is a new addition to the range that can be found at Dan Murphy’s stores.

It is absolutely delicious and ridiculously good value with juicy/spicy blackberry/dark plum notes and some soft earthiness as well. $15.

Iberian style

Gartelmann 2014 Jessica Verdelho

Nowhere in Australia does the Portuguese white grape verdelho better than the Hunter Valley, where there are several outstanding producers.

This is very much at the top of the pile; a drink-now style that’s fresh and aromatic with hints of floral and musky notes and tropical fruit flavours on the palate with just a hint of fruit sweetness.

This would be great with spicy Thai dishes or as a late afternoon thirst-quencher. $20.
