Ask Sal: How to choose the right kitchen sink

Kitchens are often the centre of the household; the place where food is cooked and important conversations take place. The kitchen sink is an important aspect of every kitchen and should not be overlooked, but with so many types of sinks available, it can become a little overwhelming to pick the one that’s best for you. Here are some factors to consider when making your decision…

Size. You need to be aware of how big your kitchen is and how much space you have available for the sink. Choose the size carefully and ensure that the measurements are correct.

Single Bowl vs Double Bowl. If you cook a lot at home or have a large household, then you will probably end up using many pots and pans. In this case, it’s good to have two bowls because it will be easier to wash the bigger dishes. You can get two same size bowls, or one slightly bigger. If you own a dishwasher, or do not cook often, then also a single bowl sink might be a better option for you.

Material. Sinks are available in stainless steel, resin composites and coated cast iron. But experts recommend stainless steel for durability. They are best suited for under-mount fitting. You can choose enamel coated cast iron if you wish to be unique, but take note that you will not get the same scratch resistance that you get with stainless steel.

Price. While this is usually the deciding factor, you should weigh this up with the ‘quality’ factor, as well as the warranty period and company’s after-care services.

Design. After you have considered all the important functional requirements, you can then focus on the design. Opt for a simple look, or get something with a little more character to it, just make sure it suits the overall design and style of your place.
