Football isn’t just for grown ups

Founded by two mums who were frustrated by the lack of fun, physical extracurricular activities to keep their kids healthy and entertained, international organisation Little Kickers now operates educational soccer programs in various locations around the Inner West from Five Dock to Marrickville, and have just been voted as the Best National Preschooler Activity (2-5 years) in the International What’s On 4 Junior Awards 2014. John Nagib, coach and owner of the Inner West and Eastern Suburbs branch of the organisation, has also been nominated as the Most Outstanding Activity Leader (0-5 years) – quite an honour for a local business person potentially training the next generation of soccer stars.

The Fighting Father

Local artist Filippa Buttitta has just completed a portrait painting of Inner West local figure Dave Smith, AKA the Fighting Father, which she will submitting to the 2014 Archibald Prize. Dave Smith is well known for his use of organised boxing and other martial arts to help young people overcome their addictions, as well as his personal boxing achievements which includes breaking the world record for most continuous rounds boxing in 2012. He began this after being appointed to Dulwich Hall as Parish Priest in 1990 and has been twice awarded Marrickville Citizen of the Year for his community work. Filippa will be hosting an advanced exhibition of this piece and others on Sunday 22nd June at 3pm at Twiverton Gallery in Lewisham.

Supporting tired eyes

The Vision Australia Drummoyne Local Client Group was relaunched on Thursday 19th June, and is set to provide support for people with eyesight conditions such as macular degeneration, cataracts or retinitis pigmentosa – as well as their friends and family. The group will meet at 11.30am on the third Thursday of every month at the Drummoyne Community Centre (located at 10 Cometrowe St, Drummoyne) to share tips, tricks and ideas on living with vision loss.
