Local vegans meat up

Marrickville has been confirmed the capital of ethical eating the second time over, with Inner West and free-range herbivores getting prepared to head to the Sydney Vegan Festival held at Factory Theatre on Sunday March 22nd.

The festival will be featuring some flavourful heavy weights including the badmouthed mother**ckers from Thug Kitchen, authors of New York Times bestseller Eat Like You Give a F**k.

For those feeling a little anaemic, Vegan Bodybuilder Jim Morris will be hosting a presentation on keeping up an animal-friendly diet whilst maintaining a shredded physique.

Sydney locals getting in on the action include Suzy Spoon Vegetarian Butcher, Sadhana Kitchen and Vegan Psychologist Clare Mann.

Childcare centre with water views

Tenders have been released for a Childcare Centre that will accommodate 60 children in Mary Street, Lilyfield. This site is beside the existing children’s playground in Leichhardt park and close to Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre.

The centre will be focused on the provision of services to children of 0-2 years of age, which are the services most in demand in the LGA.

Farewell Anna

Last weekend brought the sad news of Newtown personality, Anna Youseff, passing away. Anna was well-known for her take away shop (bearing her name) that has been on Australia Street since 1973.

To this day the shop has most of its original signage and Anna could often seen seated just outside the door.

The Youseffs migrated to Australia from Egypt in the 60’s and were very involved in the Sydney’s Coptic Orthodox Christian community. They were also greatly respected by the local authorities, feeding the officers of Newtown Police and Fire-station (which are opposite Anna’s Takeaway) throughout the 80’s.

Anna’s cousin, Yzette Lorraway, said she will remember Anna as a dear friend.

“Anna was everybody’s confidante. The shop doors were always open long after trading hours because all her friends wanted to come and have a meal.

“That shop was really home,” she said.
