Mel Gibson Visits Leichhardt Bowling Club

Members and staff at Leichhardt Bowling Club were in for a surprise when world-famous actor Mel Gibson popped in for a game of bowls last weekend. According to a club representative Gibson turned up with a group of friends, had a chat to some locals and even let a local punter teach him the ropes in bowls, making for a very exciting day in the club’s over-90-year-long history. Gibson is currently in Australia filming a World War II film, called Hacksaw Ridge. Gibson studied at NIDA in Sydney and is the founder of Icon Entertainment. He also owns the Dendy Cinemas group.

WestConnex to Increase Anzac Bridge Traffic

Leichhardt Council has expressed concerns that the proposed Third Stage of the WestConnex tunnel will increase traffic to the already congested Anzac Bridge. The recently released Project Application outlines that the tunnel, which runs from Rozelle to St Peters, will include a Rozelle interchange adding three extra lanes of traffic entering the Bridge. These lanes will be in addition to the three existing lanes entering the bridge from the City West Link.

The Rozelle interchange will provide a link between the Sydney CBD and the mainline tunnels through connections to the City West Link, Victoria Road and Anzac Bridge. Currently, the Anzac Bridge is one of Sydney’s worst choke points, with Mayor of Leichhardt Darcy Byrne describing it as an “immobile car park” in the morning. The Project Application additionally outlines a plan for twin motorway tunnels between the proposed M4 East at Haberfield and the proposed new M5 at St Peters.
