Open Marrickville
The second annual Open Marrickville Festival will take place from Thursday 20th to Sunday 30th June, showcasing and celebrating multiculturalism throughout the suburbs with storytelling, dance, theatre and art.
Unlocking the creativity of the local community, Open Marrickville kicks off on June 21st from 1pm to 5pm with a free ‘Pop Up Marrickville’ social event including food, music, activities and artists coming together in and around Wicks Park, Marrickville Bowling Club and Red Rattler Theatre. Other events that make up the exciting festival include ASYIK – the Indonesian arts and culture bazaar, Festa Junina – a traditional Brazilian June bush festival, the Aphrodite Festival – a Cypriot Festival of the Floods, a Chinese Cultural Festival, as well as Corroboration 2013, which explores Aboriginal heritage in Marrickville. Plus this year includes the first ever Pasifika Film and Arts Festival at Studio 2204, where feature and short films from Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia will be screened from June 21st to 23rd and 28th to 30th.

For the love of music
The Metropolitan Orchestra’s general manager Bevan Rigato, and chief conductor Sarah-Grace Williams – both of Lilyfield – were recently married in a ceremony in South Australia. Now back from their honeymoon, this power couple is straight back to work, preparing for their Met Series 2 concert on Sunday 23rd June.
This is not just any concert though; this is a world premiere concert event, showcasing Chilean-born Australian composer Daniel Rojas’ newest Chamber Concerto. Rojas attributes the structure of this piece to “the strength and musical skills” of Sarah-Grace, and Claire Edwardes (pictured above). Considered to be one of the most impressive percussionists of her generation, Claire will will feature as the primary performer for Rojas’ concerto. The opening piece on this night will be a rendition of Mozart’s Serenade no. 13, which is one of the composer’s most famous pieces. After the premiere of Rojas’ Chamber Concerto, the concert will conclude with Symphony no. 104 ‘London,’ the final symphony written by Joseph Haydn. Belonging: works in wood and wax
This new exhibit by Kassandra Bossell, famous for her previous work for the Sydney Olympic Games, is composed entirely of art pieces made solely with wood and wax. These works are created by “painting” recycled timber with a blowtorch and then “drawing” in lines and detail with chisels. Finally, she casts different, hardened waxes into the depressions created to complete the pieces. Kassandra’s exhibit is intended to depict the fragility of nature, the interconnectivity and interdependence of life forms, and cycles of life and death. Author Talk
Stop by Concord Library this June for an evening with esteemed barrister Mark Tedeschi AM QC, author of Eugenia – a fascinating account of one of the most extraordinary criminal trials in legal history. Eugenia Falleni lived as a man, Harry Crawford, in the 1920s during which time she officially married twice and was convicted of murdering her ‘wife.’ Come along to find out more about this enthralling case, the talk starts at 6pm and entry is free but bookings are essential by calling the Concord Library Coordinator on 9911 6351.

Strathfield Symphony Orchestra concert
The Strathfield Symphony Orchestra will explore the fantastical worlds of Japanese writer, Haruki Murakami, in a concert kicking off from 7pm on June 22nd at Marrickville Town Hall. Among other pieces, the orchestra will undertake Janacek’s Sinfonietta, which appears all the way through IQ84. Rarely heard live because of its massive brass requirements – no less than 4 horns, 12 trumpets, 2 bass trumpets, 4 trombones, tuba and 2 tenor tubas – this is a challenge the Strathfield Symphony simply couldn’t resist. Then magnificently bringing the concert to an end will be Brahms’ monumental Fourth Symphony.

NAIDOC Week Exhibition
In celebration of NAIDOC Week 2013, Five Dock Library will be hosting an exhibition that captures the spirit of the contemporary Aboriginal art world, featuring indigenous artists including Nicole Monks, Chico Monks and Kerrie Kenton. Visitors will have the chance to meet the artists themselves and enjoy some native catering by a local Aboriginal caterer on the exhibition’s opening night from 6.30pm on June 25th at the library. Entry is free so pop in anytime! The exhibition will run until Monday 29th July. For more information call 9911 6555.

Alfalfa House Food Co-op
Alfalfa House will be holding their annual fundraiser this month, where they will be showing the film “Shhift Change,” which is about co-ops all around the world, how they work and how they can be a solution to many of the problems we face today. The inspirational documentary will be accompanied by an organic, vegan meal and all of the funds collected on the night will go towards fixing up the co-op shop. Entry to the film screening is just $10, or if you’d like dinner too tickets are $20.

Leichhardt Food Forum
Local green thumbs are invited to join Leichhardt Council in their exploration of the world of sustainable food at ‘Food for the Future’ public forum at the Balmain Town Hall from 6:30pm to 9pm. The forum will feature a panel of leading experts who will discuss the question: How can inner-city communities engage in sustainable food initiatives? Speakers include Jon Dee, co-founder of ‘Planet Ark,’ Professor John Crawford from Sydney Uni, Alexandra Iljadica and Joanna Baker, co-founders of the Youth Food Movement, as well as Jane Mowbray of Glover’s Community Garden. Come along and ask all your food-related questions and taste the difference of healthy sustainable food with delicious nibbles provided by the Veggie Patch Van.

Footprints Film Fest
Entries are now open for locals to submit a short film with an environmental theme to the Footprints Film Festival, offering upcoming filmmakers the chance to win up to $5,000 worth of prizes and have their film screened at the Footprints Eco Festival on August 25th in front of hundreds of people. Anyone can enter and themes to use include land, climate change, air quality, transport, water, biodiversity, waste and consumption. You will need internet access to upload your film to Vimeo.com and a camera, though even a camera phone would work!
