Berton Vineyards 2013 The Vermentino
The Berton winery in the Riverina has a magical touch with the Italian dry white grape variety vermentino.
The 2012 vintage was a major success and the new-release 2013 just picked up a trophy for best dry white wine at the Royal Queensland Show.
That’s quite some achievement for a wine that has a bargain-basement price tag.
Crisp, fresh, dry and clean, this would be terrific paired with tempura seafood. $12
Cracking rosé
Margan 2013 Shiraz Saignee
Andrew and Lisa Margan produce an outstanding range of Hunter wines – and also have one of the Hunter’s best cellar doors. Made from shiraz grapes, this is a terrific – and affordable – rosé wine, produced using the French saignee method.
Made from fruit grown on 40-year-old vines this has berry and cherry juicy fruit flavours with hints of spice and earthiness.
Plenty of length here in a wine that would be great with a falafel roll. $18
Italian accent
Freeman 2009 Secco Rondinella Corvina
Brian Freeman has pioneered the growing of Italian grape varieties rondinella and corvina in the Hilltops region outside Young – and this is a delightfully savoury red wine in the Italian mould, made using the ‘amarone’ method to extract maximum flavour from the grapes.
A medium-bodied wine with delightful structure, it has morello cherry notes and is long, complex and very interesting.
Food friendly, too. $35
