2017 Golden Globe Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, Neruda is a glorious mix of history and imagination from the award-winning director of Jackie and No, Pablo Larraín. It’s set in 1948 as the Cold War reached Chile, when the poet and socialist politician Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) and his artist wife Delia (Mercedes Morán) were forced into hiding. Beloved by the populace, they slipped underground, pursued by vainglorious police inspector Oscar Peluchonneau (the superb Gael Garcia Bernal), who was hoping to make a name for himself by capturing the country’s most infamous fugitive. Loosely based on actual events, Neruda is more an inspired piece of mischief from a master filmmaker – and one we rated as one of the five movies you must see in May MA15+ from May 25. Sneak previews – May 19 – 21.
