Scandinavian Film Festival ticket giveaway

It took a while, but winter has finally arrived in Sydney.

Some may say “better late then never,” but if that chill is too much for you – what better remedy than to escape to a warm, dark cinema and watch movies from places even colder than here. And just in time for the cool change, the Volvo Scandinavian Film Festival returns to Palace Cinemas in July, once again showcasing the best of Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Icelandic cinema, from award-winning dramas to esoteric comedies and the very best of Nordic Noir.

The 2018 program opens at Palace Norton Street on July 10 with a pitch black comedy about a group of neighbours fighting about a tree (Under The Tree). Other notable films include the dark and very clever exploration of a dysfunctional relationship from a Danish man’s point of view (A Horrible Woman), a compelling coming-of-age drama in which a Norwegian teen fights against the traditional values and expectations of her Pakistani emigrant parents (What Will People Say) and a gothic interpretation of a well-known folk tale (Valley of Shadows).

Both the romantic thriller Thelma, which follows a student who moves to Oslo where she discovers that she has strangely terrifying powers, and Amateurs, winner of the 2018 Göteborg Film Festival award for Best Nordic Film, are arriving promptly on our shore after creating quite a buzz at festivals and events in Europe. And if that’s not enough for film buffs, for the 100th anniversary of Ingmar Bergman’s birth the festival will be screening Bergman Revisted, a curated selection of six short films honouring the great director and made by some of Sweden’s most prominent directors including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’s Tomas Alfredson.

In Sydney the festival screens at Palace Norton Street, Palace Verona and Palace Central from July 10 – 29. Check the website for dates and venues in other capital cities, where you can find details on the entire lineup of 21 films, and book tickets too.
