National Songwriting Awards, Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Wed 30 Oct. The ASA’s National Songwriting Awards is an important annual gathering of songwriters, entertainment industry professionals, and fans of Australian music! Open to the public, this event is a ‘glittering sit-down dinner – an unmissable fixture on the music industry calendar’, and the night will feature the induction by Glenn A Baker of iconic Australian songwriting team Greedy Smith and Martin Plaza (Mental As Anything). With Martin suffering ill-health, Greedy will be there accepting the award and performing live with the Mental As Anything band. Their hits include Live it Up, Too Many Times, Come Around, The Nips Are Getting Bigger, If You Leave Me Can I Come Too and Mr Natural.
Other highlights of the night include ‘Song And Dance Man’ Mike McClellan, who will perform and be interviewed as Special Guest Artist. Mike is an amazing songwriter from an interesting family, with his brother being Justice Peter McClellan.
The Awards will showcase the winning songs from each category in the 2019 Australian Songwriting Contest. These live performances guarantee a fascinating insight into current songwriting trends and fresh Australian talent. All Top 10 placegetters will be acknowledged on stage by a range of celebrity presenters and sponsors, including local resident Ray Burgess (ex King of Pop nominee), 60s singing stars Dinah Lee and Little Pattie, original members of Ray Brown and the Whispers, Lawrie Barclay and Pat Jeffery, as well as Colin Burgess (ex AC/DC and Masters Apprentices drummer) and Ray Butler from Johnny O’Keefe band. The MC will be ex weatherman and current Chairman of Wests Ashfield Leagues Club, Mike Bailey, and a number of members from the Inner West Council will be there supporting the event. As major sponsors of the Arts in their area, Board members of West Ashfield Leagues, including local realestate agent Tony Andreacchio and radio announcer Rick Wayde will also be in attendance.
Major Sponsor APRA, the music industry collection agency, provided $3,000 cool hard cash to the APRA/ASA Songwriter of the Year, and the winner of this will be announced on the night. PPCA also sponsors a $500 prize for the evening’s Best Live Performance. Other Major Sponsor, Wests Ashfield Leagues, also offers something for the audience too with a lucky door prize that could see you eating for free at its fabulous restaurant The Garden.
