Taste of Shanghai

This year is the third year in a row that Taste of Shanghai has been nominated for an Inner West Local Business Award and Managing Director,  Aaron Mi, says it always feels good be named a finalist. Here we chat to Aaron about what makes their Ashfield branch one of the best restaurants in the Inner West…

The first Taste of Shanghai restaurant opened in Ashfield back in 2006 when Aaron noticed there was no proper Shanghainese restaurants in the area at the time and decided to open an “authentic Chinese and Shanghainese restaurant to satisfy the appetite of local Chinese and Western customers.” By mixing traditional and modern Chinese cuisine to suit the tastes of the Inner West market, the restaurant quickly became a favourite eatery among locals because the people loved the food as well as the atmosphere.

“Running a restaurant is not easy; it requires hard work and you must fully focus on every single detail, but I think bringing fresh food to the table is the key to having a successful restaurant,” says Aaron. “The food philosophy at Taste of Shanghai is a combination of culture and food together; customers can experience Chinese culture through the food they having.”

The success of this first store is what then inspired Aaron to open more restaurants. “Actually we are still expanding, so far we have four Taste of Shanghai restaurants – at World Square, Eastwood, Hurstville and one flagship fine dining restaurant called Shanghai Stories1938 located in Chatswood,” he explains.

Since first starting out Aaron and his team have worked very hard on all aspects of the restaurants form the food, menu design and staff development to hygiene and customer service so it’s great to see the hard word pay off. To the loyal customers that have supported the restaurant over the years, Aaron says “Thank you, I appreciate all of those who voted this year. I feel that this honour is not only for my staff’s hard work, but also it is inspires us to invent more delicious foods for our customers so that they can keep coming back to our restaurant again and again.”
