Winner of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, Desiree Akhavan’s new feature stars Chloë Grace Moretz in a career-best performance as a young teen sent to a gay conversion therapy camp.
Recently orphaned, Cameron looks the part of a perfect high school girl. But after she’s caught with another girl in the back seat of a car on prom night, she is quickly shipped off by her religious guardian aunt to a conversion therapy centre that treats teens “struggling with same-sex attraction.” At the facility, Cameron is subjected to outlandish discipline and dubious “de-gaying” indoctrination – but this unusual setting also provides her with an unlikely community. For the first time, Cameron connects with peers, and she’s able to find her place among fellow outcasts.
Balancing out inherent drama with understated humour, The Miseducation Of Cameron Post is in turns heartbreaking, compassionate and wryly funny. It screened in the Official Competition at the Sydney Film Festival, and has just featured in the Melbourne International Film Festival. CTC In selected cinemas* from Sept 6
*Note – limited release, Sydney and Melbourne only
