After a few years of erratic scheduling by Palace, the annual Cine Latino Film Festival is settling into its November slot and going from strength to strength. By far Australia’s largest festival of Latin American cinema, it features films from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Paraguay. This year it includes a particularly strong line-up of critically acclaimed films, many of which have been submitted to represent their country at the upcoming Academy Awards.
They include the Opening Night’s Roma (Mexico, from acclaimed director Alfonso Cuarón), Marcelo Martinessi’s The Heiresses (The Paraguan same-sex drama which won the 2018 Sydney Film Festival’s Official Competition prize ), the brilliant duo behind Embrace of the Serpent Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra’s Birds Of Passage (Colombia), and Luis Ortega’s wild El Ángel (Argentina), pictured below.
But all tastes are accounted for. Look out for the wickedly provocative thriller Animal from the co-writer of Birdman, one of the most anticipated Argentinian films of the year. Fans of popular comedies are in for a treat too, with smash hits from the region like How To Break Up With Your Douchbag (the title says it all) and An Unexpected Love (below), a funny and hugely entertaining romantic comedy starring Ricardo Darín and Mercedes Morán as a long-married couple who begin to question the true meaning of love and desire after becoming empty-nesters.
Returning from last year, the Cine Argentina section includes eight of the most recent box office Argentinean hits, and as well there’s a Cuban retrospective featuring some classics from Havana on the big screen. In Sydney The festival screens at Palace Norton St, Palace Verona and Central. Check out other state’s venues and the entire program at the festival website.
Win double passes
Thanks to Palace Cinemas, we have five double in season passes to give away valid for any festival film (ex Opening Night and Special Events). No Cine Latino festival would be complete without featuring Latin America’s best-known star, Gael García Bernal – in fact he stars in two festival films (here and here). For a chance to win email us at info@ciaomagazine.com.au with “Cine Latino Film Festival” in the subject line, and tell us the name of one of those two films. Remember to include your name and a postal address for the tickets. Entries close midday Thursday Nov 15.
