Freud’s Last Session

Starring Academy Award® winner Anthony Hopkins (The Father) “at the top of his game” (Deadline) and Emmy nominee Matthew Goode (The Crown, Downton Abbey), FREUD’S LAST SESSION will release in Australian cinemas on April 18.

Both Hopkins and Goode “deliver sterling performances” (Deadline) in this cinematic adaptation of Mark St Germain’s off-Broadway smash, in which a battle of the minds plays out between Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis, on the eve of the Second World War.

Freud’s Last Session unfolds on the eve of the Second World War as two of the greatest minds of the 20th century, father of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud (Hopkins) and children’s author C.S. Lewis (Goode), converge for their own personal battle over the existence of God, the future of mankind and the complex relationships that shaped them.

Adapted by Mark St. Germain from his off-Broadway smash, Freud’s Last Session interweaves the lives of Freud and Lewis – past, present, and through fantasy. Director Matt Brown’s cinematic adaptation bursts through the walls of Freud’s study, taking the two characters on a dynamic journey across London.

Director Matt Brown said: “Beyond my own intellectual curiosity and inclination towards this piece as the son of a psychiatrist, there is a deep recognition of how incredibly timely and important this film is. We live in an age that is so ideologically polarised, where everyone is stuck in their own tribes, with no real dialogue, no intellectual curiosity. I want to make a film for all audiences that can be emotional, thought-provoking and creative. A film that can ask the big questions, while investigating what’s at the heart of all human condition: love, faith and mortality.”
