Jonnie’s Seafood in Marketplace Leichhardt is a first time nominee in the Inner West Local Business Awards this year but they’ve got decades of experience behind them and are set to give their fellow nominees some serious competition…

Business owner John Carbone said it was a good feeling to be recognised as part of the awards and thanked his loyal customers – most of whom are regulars from the local area – for their support throughout the years and their votes.

A veteran in the seafood industry, John has worked in seafood retail for over 20 years and perviously owned a shop in Birkenhead Point before moving his business to Leichhardt where he is well known for his good quality seafood, great prices and friendly service. Coming from a fishing family, no one knows good produce better than John and he does the buying at the fish markets himself, though his son Tony helps him out by working in the store.

A truly family-run business, their biggest sellers are the mussels, salmon and swordfish but what many of the local Italian residents might be pleased to find out is that John supplies stockfish year-round as well (otherwise known as pesce stocco traditionally). “We get it in every couple of weeks as it takes about a week to prepare,” says John. Those who have discovered it, always come back asking for more so John makes sure to get some in about every second week.

It’s this kind of care for customers that keeps people coming back to Jonnie’s Seafood, as well as John himself who is someone that can be trusted to provide the best produce and genuinely enjoys his job. Handling fish is second nature to him, so it’s no wonder he’s been named a finalist in the 2014 awards. To the staff that helped him achieve this honour, he says “thank you!”
