“Sex, sweat and swagger…”
Those innovative people at Dendy Cinemas seem to be coming up with ever more clever ways of getting us into the theatres. One of the more intriguing special events just added to their busy program is a series of retro screenings featuring thematic food, drink and nostalgic moments. And on February 26 the series kicks off at Dendy Newtown with a special screening of the iconic debut film from Prince, Purple Rain.
For anyone who has forgotten, the 1984 film sharply divided the critics, but even those who dismissed it couldn’t resist the music. Entertainment Weekly called it “A mesmerizing rock-video psychodrama,” while Variety wrote: “A rousing contemporary addition to the classic backstage musical genre.” Then again Empire magazine declared, “ [Prince] just comes across as a petulant brat, rather than the symbolically tortured artist.” Fortunately they added, “The music, however, is divine.”
And then there’s this: “The drama is clunky, the acting is awful more often than not, and the casual sexism simmers throughout. But whenever Prince takes the stage to perform one of his sizzling songs, the picture irresistibly exudes sex, sweat and swagger in equal measure.” (Creative Loafing)
Ok, that’s got us hooked… Purple Rain screens at 6.30pm on Monday February 26 at Dendy Cinemas Newtown and includes a special Purple Rain cocktail on arrival. Bookings and more details here – just $15 for club members, $18 for others (and remember, Dendy no longer charges an online booking fees).
