The best places to watch the Melbourne Cup

Impractical headwear, office sweeps and long luncheons – it’s all part of the fun on Melbourne Cup Day. There are plenty of options, whether you’re after a big lunch, a big screen or just want to wear a big hat…


Woolwich Pier Hotel

Hosted by Ron Wilson, the best part about this cup lunch will definitely be the food. The menu is to die for, plus you get a glass of Veuve Clicquot on arrival. $95 a head and well worth it!


The Royal Hotel

This will be the first Melbourne Cup at the pub since the Royal changed ownership and it’s set to be a huge one. They’ll have prizes for best dressed and best hat, as well as other giveaways and sweeps. The race will be shown live and loud on their big screens and you can get a two-course lunch with prosecco on arrival for $48 a head.


Leichhardt Bowling Club

Enjoy Happy Hour drink prices from midday until the big race at the LBC, plus prizes are up for grabs for best dressed, best hat and for trivia questions you answer correctly.


Club Five Dock

Five Dock is the place for fun and food with a two-course lunch at Three Peppers restaurant on offer ($17.50) as well as a hat parade, sweeps and a complimentary glass of bubbly. If you’re after something a little different however, there will also be a special Melbourne Cup High Tea Buffet available ($39) with cocktails, live entertainment and an assortment of sweets, French pastries, fruits and sandwiches alongside herbal teas and coffee from 1pm to 4pm.


3 Weeds

For an elegant racing affair, sign up for a three-course luncheon at Rozelle’s 3 Weeds ($78), or if you prefer a more relaxed option they do a hamper to snack on all day too.


The Balmain Hotel

Balmain’s newest and coolest pub will have a Mad Hatters Melbourne Cup Enclosure on race day complete with delicious canapes, seriously good drinks, A REAL HORSE and horse lotto. Plus, there’ll be prizes for the best dressed, a live band and, of course, the big screen. You can’t get much better than that, this event will be guaranteed fun.


The Royal Oak Hotel

If you’re looking to get dressed up for Melbourne Cup then book a table at the Royal Oak, where you’re invited to “frock up for a fabulous day!” For $75 per person, you’ll get a three-course lunch, oysters and canapes on arrival.



If food is the most important part of your race day and you’ve got a big group to feed, then Kazbah offers great value for money with the Ottoman Lunch feast, plus complimentary glass of sparkling, for just $35. There will also be a special Cup-themed dessert, the race will be screened live and there will be lucky door prizes and mystery bets.



For those of you who want to make a day out of Melbourne Cup, the WatervieW is hosting a super stylish luncheon that kicks off at 11.30am and features Motown music, a fashion parade, sweeps, raffles and three-course lunch with a glass of bubbly (or two!). A table of 10 is $1250.
