Roadtest: The Craft Spirit Circuit

Kuki Tanuki

A recent arrival for Erskineville, Kuki Tanuki is a refreshing addition to a suburb known for its small bars and relaxed pub culture. The venue doesn’t disappoint, with the Japanese influence apparent in both their food, drink and décor – expect only the finest imported whiskeys, sublime kawaii cocktails and an extensive sake list which can be expertly paired with their menu. The venue itself has both indoor and outdoor seating, and the staff are more than happy to help in delivering a hard-earned, well-deserved drink that packs a punch.

Poor Tom’s Gin

For the gin devotees be sure to give Poor Tom’s a try – it’s the only spirit produced by this distillery. Lovingly manufactured in the heart of the Inner West, passionate co-founders Jesse Kennedy and Griffin Blumer focus solely on this one kind of liquor to ensure that the highest amount of care goes into producing their signature spirit. Poor Tom’s Gin can be purchased through various liquor retailers, and the brand is becoming a recognisable staple at many local bars around town. The boys plan on operating a tasting tour from the distillery in the future – my fingers and toes are crossed that they open to the public very soon!

The 3 Weeds Hotel

A unique ensemble of international spirits and liquors make this pub a convenient go-to for all kinds of drinking connoisseurs, and their extensive range also includes many well-known Australian brands if you wish to keep your tastebuds closer to home. The 3 Weeds is a great place for one of those surprise afternoon-turned-evening outings, with both a restaurant and bar food available if you’re feeling peckish. Aperitifs, whiskeys and various types of tequila predominate the drinks list, however for something a little different try the herb-infused spirits they make on site… rosemary vodka, anyone?
