Win one of five double passes!
Showcasing the latest talents of Italy’s best filmmakers, The 2019 Lavazza Italian Film Festival will once again screen at Palace’s cinemas all over Australia this September and October. It’s the festival’s 20th year, which means the Zeccola family, the founders of Palace who have lovingly programmed it for two decades, have worked extra hard to make this year’s celebration of Italian cinema the best ever. With a program featuring 26 of the best new Italian films from 2019 as well as classic cinematic gems, special presentations, aperitivo nights, receptions and galas, it’s certainly destined to be Palace’s biggest event of the year.
In Sydney it all kicks of on September 17 at Palace Norton Street, and once again Ciao is able to offer its readers a chance to win tickets. Details on how to enter are below – but first, head to the festival’s website to check out the line-up. It is, without a doubt an impressive one, making what to choose to see, as always, quite a challenge… Fortunately for serious film buffs, the Bvlgari Critics’ Choice Award is back again this year. Inaugurated several years ago, it’s the festival’s official competition and offers a handy guide to the most critically acclaimed recent releases.
The five films in competition form an exclusive snapshot of the finest contemporary Italian productions, ranging from critically acclaimed dramas to bittersweet comedies. The films are: The Vice of Hope (above) – Edoardo De Angelis’ follows up his acclaimed drama Indivisible with the story of a woman fighting to escape the criminal underworld she has been born into; Berlin Film Festival FIPRESCI prize-winner Dafne – a poignant and feel-good portrait of a delicate family struck by a tragedy; If Life Gives You Lemons (top pic above) – troubled family bonds are the subject of this intimately affective drama which premiered at the 2018 Venice International Film Festival; If Only – direct from its Locarno Film Festival premiere, this Italo-French 80s-set period comedy features Italian super-stars Alba Rohrwacher and Riccardo Scamarcio; and Twin Flower – a nuanced and profound drama about two troubled teenagers set against the beautiful Sardinian landscape.
