Outdoor flicks and fun

Back for another brilliant season, Leichhardt Council’s Pics in the Park program is bringing  free outdoor movies to a park near you this month! Local parks will be transformed into outdoor cinemas this summer with screenings of a delightful upwards animation, a thrilling magical tale of illusions and a ghostly classic…

Take a seat on the Village Green at Mort Bay Park on February 7th from 8pm for a screening of short family films from Flickerfest to be followed by the feature film ‘Up’. Then on February 21st, Now You See Me will be showing at Pioneers Memorial Park, telling the story of FBI agents as they track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money. The final movie event will be a screening of Ghostbusters again at Mort Bay Park on Friday 7th March from 8.30pm.

All ages are welcome to come along and enjoy a picnic under the stars while supporting a local charity with gold coin donations being collected at each screening to support Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets.

whats-on-POPPrivates on parade

Passion. War. Music. Blokes in dresses. What’s not to love?

Winner of the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in its debut in 1977, Peter Nichol’s world renown musical Privates on Parade will soon be coming to our fair shores. New Theatre first produced the play back in 1989 and it is returning to Newtown from February 11th to March 8th in collaboration with this year’s Mardi Gras celebrations.

The story follows that of the Song and Dance Unit South East Asia, a group of military misfits posted to Singapore to entertain British troops during the Malayan Emergency of 1948. Described by Time Out, London as “Apocalypse Now given the Kenneth Williams remix or Cabaret retold by Noel Coward”, Privates on Parade is as hilariously farcical as it is fraught with themes of colonialism, homophobia and personal stories of fear and loneliness. Ultimately, this is as much a coming-of-age comedy as it is a satire of one dark reality.

To WIN a double pass to the preview performance of Privates on Parade on Wednesday 13th Feb at 7.30pm, see our Giveaways page for details on how to enter!

Until Sunday 9th February
Dames of Throne Burlesque

The Game of Thrones TV show went to air three years ago and has become more than just one of the most popular shows on the box; it has become a cultural phenomenon. There are parodies of it all over the Internet and I am sure most people thought it had about reached as far as it could. Well, they were wrong, because now The Vanguard is putting on a burlesque parody of the show. Considering the series’ predilection for nudity, perhaps this isn’t really a stretch. Regardless, this should be a very fun show and I am sure it will be good for a chuckle at $43.80 per head.
