Inner West Councils are friends of Millers Point

A Friends of Millers Point action group has started to oppose the commercial sale of Millers Point Public Housing, with its membership including Marrickville and Leichhardt Councillors, as well as newly appointed Leichhardt Mayor, Rochelle Porteous.

The group has arisen ‘in solidarity’ with the tenants of Millers Point, Dawes point and the Sirius tower, where the planned commercial sale of public housing is estimated to affect 400 tenants over the next two years.

Mayor Porteous said she is concerned about the precedent that is being set for housing located in other areas of Sydney.

“Leichhardt Council has approximately 2,800 local residents in public housing. There is a chronic shortage of public, affordable and supported housing here in Leichhardt and right across Sydney. We need to protect our existing public housing,” Mayor Porteous said.

Love Note to Wall

Public artist and Balmain resident Peque and his wife, Cara, were delighted to find a love letter tied to the mural Peque is currently painting on the corner of Quirk St and Victoria Rd in Rozelle, which was commissioned as part of Leichhardt Council’s Wall 2 Wall competition.

Having recently moved to Sydney from Mexico, Peque hopes the mural will remind Sydneysiders of the beauty of their local area as they drive down Sydney’s major arterial road. Peque also wanted the mural to serve as a tribute to the lorikeets who visit his windowsill daily.

Three Wall 2 Wall murals will be officially unveiled on November 7th.

Citizen of the Year nominations now open
