In 2012 husband and wife team Davide and Trish Salmeri started Black Poison out of a garage. As they now celebrate their first birthday in their beautifully designed Five Dock café, Ciao asks the secret to their success.
Famous around the Inner West for their wide variety of muffins – the product that started the journey – Davide and Trish like to refer to their business as the Black Poison Laboratorio, where the cafe’s six pastry chefs are truly free to experiment and create.
“Every single item is not made for the money, but made from love and passion,” says Davide. “If you can’t feel passion and love, then it is not the product you should be eating.” And perhaps it is this simple message that has seen Black Poison gain its loyal following and consistent five star reviews.
Despite the positive feedback, according to Davide there is always room for improvement. “I am not a person to say my product is the best, I let the customer be the judge,” he says.
Davide’s background is in architecture and design, so it is no surprise that the location is almost as enticing as the menu. Davide and Trish even welcome all customers to come and browse around their modern, open-plan kitchen and check out the chefs in action. “We would like to invite everybody to come and see what we create for you. To be a part of our family.”
During our conversation, Davide hinted at some exciting things coming up for Black Poison; “We have some plans that we don’t want to reveal just yet, till they are perfected.” So you will all have to check it out for yourself.
Black Poison is located at 96 Queens Road, Five Dock, and open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, coffee and sweets.
